This week, Republican U.S. Senators condemned President Joe Biden’s administration for extending condolences in the wake of Iran’s president’s death in a helicopter accident on Sunday.

The helicopter that was transporting President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian crashed in Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province due to the presence of exceptionally dense fog.

“The United States expresses its official condolences for the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian, and other members of their delegation in a helicopter crash in northwest Iran. As Iran selects a new president, we reaffirm our support for the Iranian people and their struggle for human rights and fundamental freedoms.” the Biden state department said in an official statement.

During a hearing this week, Senate Republican Conference Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY) criticized Secretary of State Antony Blinken for the statement.

“I don’t think it should be a normal course of business. I think it’s shocking that this administration would mourn the death of the ‘Butcher of Tehran.’ I don’t. He’s responsible for death, rape, torture, the sworn enemy of the free world. So I think it’s a terrible mistake, Mr. Secretary.” he said.

Other senators joined in the condemnation of the radical move from the Biden administration.
