A coalition of House Republicans has now reportedly formed with the objective of procuring a Congressional Gold Medal, the preeminent civilian honor conferred by the Legislative Branch, for former President Donald Trump.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-LA) is the leader of the long-shot initiative, which at least six other Republicans support, including House Republican chief deputy whip Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA).
The gold medal collection of Congress includes the following former presidents: George Washington, Ulysses S. Grant, Harry Truman, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan.
Nevertheless, considering the current political climate and the Republican Party’s slight majority in the House while the Democrats maintain control of the Senate, it is improbable that Trump will secure the award in the near future.
However, in pursuit of re-election, Trump’s Republican allies in Congress have sponsored a variety of honorific measures for the former president.
“Despite the liberal media’s attempts to spread fear, America and the world were undoubtedly safer under President Donald Trump,” Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said.
“One of our duties in Congress is to honor those who have contributed significantly to our nation, and that’s why I’m introducing this legislation,” she continued.
Last month, Reschenthaler spearheaded a House Republican effort to rename Donald J. Trump International Airport from Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia.
Trump is currently attempting to defend himself against criminal prosecutions at the state and federal levels, alleging that these investigations are driven by political ambitions and a “witch hunt” against him.
