The ludicrous fine that New York has levied against former President Donald Trump has become so egregious that even major supporters of Barack Obama have called it out of line.
Don Peeples, a major Democratic fundraiser, has come to the defense of former President Trump, arguing against the $464 million bond imposed on him by a New York judge.
Speaking to Fox News, he argued that the New York attorney general is clearly aiming to cause “discomfort” of Trump rather than actually fight for fairness and justice.
On Thursday, however, Don Peebles suggested to Fox News the situation is a ploy to disrupt Trump’s presidential campaign and hurt him personally before that ability is lost in future proceedings, and that James “made a mistake.”
“I have expressed concern that I think that this is a very slippery slope to selectively enforce an archaic law that has got no victim,” Peebles said on “Your World,” adding James should allow Trump to continue the appeals process unimpeded if she is confident in her case.
Peebles also said the bond has nothing to do with whether Trump is a flight risk, but more so a guarantee of sorts the state of New York is able to damage Trump while it has the chance.
“I think they are confident, or think it’s likely that this will get reversed, and then there will be no punishment,” he said.
The comments only add fuel to the fire that New York is violating Trump’s 8th Amendment rights in order to undermine the GOP frontrunner and help a deeply unpopular Democrat in the White House.
Trump has begun fighting back, however.
Early Friday morning, the former president made a surprise announcement that he has compiles “nearly” $500 million in cash, contradicting his legal team’s assertions that he would struggle to meet the $464 million judgment against him and his co-defendants in the civil fraud case led by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Trump’s statement acknowledged what every non-partisan can see: the real purpose behind the fine and high bond is to help Biden and hurt Trump.
“Through hard work, talent, and luck, I currently have almost five hundred million dollars in cash, a substantial amount of which I intended to use in my campaign for president,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social in all caps. “The often overturned political hack judge on the rigged and corrupt A.G. case, where I have done nothing wrong, knew this, wanted to take it away from me, and that’s where and why he came up with the shocking number which, coupled with his crazy interest demand, is approximately $454,000,000.”
Trump’s attorneys have previously claimed they’ve spent “countless hours” negotiating with one of the largest insurance companies to help him pay for his ridiculous bond. The judge in the case has ruled that Trump must put up over $450 million to merely use his right to appeal the ruling.
