Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) is now urging Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to prevent President Biden from delivering his upcoming State of the Union address.

During a recent appearance on Fox Business, Perry emphasized the importance for Republicans to increase pressure on Biden regarding the situation at the southern border due to the surge in migrants.

“We need to use every single point of leverage. [The president] comes at the invitation of Congress, and Republicans are in control of the House. There’s no reason that we need to invite him to get more propaganda and actually blame the American people for the crisis he’s caused.” Perry remarked.

House Republicans have declined bipartisan legislation supported by Biden that aimed to enhance border security, following opposition from former President Trump, who is currently the leading candidate for the party’s presidential nomination.

Some critics argue that Republicans are more focused on aiding Trump in 2024 than actually addressing the issue at hand.

Perry, a retired National Guard general, has expressed doubts about Biden’s mental fitness to remain in office.

Johnson secured the gavel in October following a period of intense GOP conflict regarding former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and his successor.

Republicans in the chamber have openly heckled Biden during his past addresses since he assumed office in January 2021.

In an unprecedented move, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) postponed then-President Trump from delivering his 2019 State of the Union speech due to a partial government shutdown that January.

After a delay, Trump finally gave his speech, but Pelosi did not introduce him.
