The Attorney General of New York issued a warning to former President Donald Trump, stating that his New York properties could be seized if he fails to pay the $354 million civil fraud fine imposed by a New York judge last week.
James, who alleged that Trump provided inaccurate financial statements to banks in order to obtain more favorable loan terms, stated that she would assume control of the ex-president’s assets if he failed to pay the fine.
Trump, who is making a bid for the presidency once again, intends to challenge the ruling that prevented him and two of his sons from engaging in business in the state of New York, along with the imposed penalty.
James mentioned the Trump Building, a 72-story structure with 1.3 million square feet of office space on Wall Street near the New York Stock Exchange.
“If he does not have funds to pay off the judgment, then we will seek judgment enforcement mechanisms in court, and we will ask the judge to seize his assets. We are prepared to make sure that the judgment is paid to New Yorkers, and yes, I look at 40 Wall Street each and every day.” James said.
Trump has rejected any misconduct and argues that the ruling was influenced by political motives related to the election.
Alina Habba, Trump’s attorney, expressed confidence in reversing the decision at the appellate level.
In his reaction to the ruling, Trump highlighted statements James made during her campaign for attorney general, where she vowed to bring charges against him.
At one point, she even went as far as to suggest she would assist in his removal from office.
