According to a stunning new report, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) privately disclosed to his colleagues that he was the one who instigated the removal of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) due to the ongoing ethics investigation into him.

A complaint has been filed with the House Ethics Committee alleging that Gaetz had sexual relations with a minor.

CNN reported on Wednesday that the committee has requested materials from the Department of Justice in connection with its investigation of the congressman.

The House inquiry commenced in 2021 during the tenure of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and persisted under McCarthy, who has stated that Gaetz requested him to terminate the investigation. Gaetz has disputed this in public.

Gaetz’s resolution to vacate the chair, submitted in October, prompted a House vote on whether or not to remove McCarthy. Seven Republicans, including Gaetz, joined the Democrats in expelling the speaker.

McCarthy, according to the Florida lawmaker, allegedly violated a January 2023 agreement with Gaetz when he withdrew his opposition to McCarthy’s speakership elevation on the fifteenth ballot.

These accounts support McCarthy’s public statements from the previous year, in which he claimed Gaetz had grudges against him for not stifling the investigation.
