On Monday, President Joe Biden continued his criticisms of Donald Trump, his principal political adversary, and his supporters, this time by attempting to draw parallels between them and “defeated Confederates.”
Biden delivered his remarks at a campaign event held at Mother Emanuel AME church in Charleston, South Carolina, which tragically lost nine black members in 2015 in a massacre fueled by racial animosity.
“After the Civil War, the defeated Confederates couldn’t accept the verdict of the war, they lost. So they say they embraced what is known as the lost cause, the self-serving lie that the Civil War was not about slavery but about states’ rights. They call that the noble cause. That was a lie. So let me be clear, slavery was the cause of the Civil War. There is no negation about that.” Biden said.
“Now, we’re living in an era of a second lost cause. Once again, there are some in this country trying to turn a loss into a lie. A lie which if allowed to live will once again bring terrible damage to this country. This time the lie is about the 2020 election.” he continued.

Biden further criticized Trump and his supporters during his speech, reiterating that the former president continues to threaten “democracy” as the 2024 presidential election heated up.
Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), a co-chair of Biden’s campaign, was in attendance at his address in South Carolina.
Clyburn was instrumental in the president’s victory in the state during the 2020 Democratic primary and is currently assuming a substantial role in his re-election campaign within the state.
