As the 2012 Republican presidential nominee who broke with his party by supporting the impeachment of former President Donald J. Trump, Senator Mitt Romney of Utah reportedly announced on Wednesday that he would not run for reelection in 2024. He said he wanted to make room for a “new generation of leaders.”

He made the forceful recommendation that neither President Biden, 80, nor Mr. Trump, 77, should follow his example and withdraw to make space for younger contenders.
He claimed that neither was leading his party to address the “critical challenges” the country faces.
