Francis Suarez, a Republican running for president, reportedly appeared to acknowledge during a national security-related radio broadcast on Tuesday morning that he had no idea what a Uyghur is.

Suarez made the revelation while appearing on The Hugh Hewitt Show.

“Will you be talking about the Uyghurs in your campaign?” Hewitt asked Suarez.

“The what,” Suarez responded.

“The Uyghurs,” Hewitt replied.

“What’s a Uyghur,” Suarez asked.

“You’ve got to get smart on that.” Hewitt said in response to Suarez’s ignorance.

The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northern China is home to the Turkic Uyghur ethnic group, which originated in middle and East Asia.

The Chinese Communist Party is accused of violating the Uyghurs’ human rights.
