Top Republicans in Nassau County, New York, are now reportedly demanding that GOP Rep. George Santos resign immediately for misrepresenting crucial elements of his career, calling the freshman member a “campaign of dishonesty and falsehoods.”
More than a dozen Republican politicians from Santos’ district condemned Santos’ falsehoods and called for his resignation.
“He’s disgraced the House of Representatives and we do not consider him one of our congresspeople,” Nassau County Republican Party Chairman Joseph Cairo said concerning Santos’ series of scandals.
The latest setback for Santos comes as the beleaguered rookie congressman, who was sworn in early Saturday morning, confesses to fabricating important aspects of his personal life and is now being investigated by federal and local politicians.
Santos has been recorded inflating, and at times downright lying, about his background, including claims that he worked on Wall Street.
Prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York are looking into Santos’ finances, including potential financial disclosure issues, as a result of the falsehoods and embellishments he told during the race.
On Monday, the Campaign Legal Center, a nonpartisan campaign finance monitor, filed an ethics complaint against Santos with the Federal Election Commission for allegedly breaking campaign finance regulations.
