Former President Trump slammed the Supreme Court on Wednesday after it denied his emergency petition to protect his tax returns from being released to House Democrats, will may then go on to leak them to their allies in the press.
The court’s decision on Tuesday brought an end to a multiyear legal struggle by Trump to prevent the returns from being releases, and has opened the door for the House Ways and Means Committee to finally obtain them.
“Why would anybody be surprised that the Supreme Court has ruled against me, they always do! It is unprecedented to be handing over Tax Returns, & it creates terrible precedent for future Presidents. Has Joe Bidenpaid taxes on all of the money he made illegally from Hunter & beyond.” Trump wrote on his social media site Truth Social.
During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump broke with precedent by refusing to publicly disclosing his tax returns. Trump cited an audit as the primary reason at the time.
Trump made the claim despite the fact that IRS laws do not prohibit someone from disclosing their returns while under audit.
House Democrats have requested the data, claiming they need to investigate how the IRS performs routine presidential audits.
For their part, Trump’s attorneys have dismissed the request as part of a politicized witchhunt by Democrats against the former president.
In 2020, the Supreme Court, which includes three Trump nominees, rejected moves to invalidate President Biden’s electoral victory.
That December, the Supreme Court rejected a Texas-led effort, backed by 126 House Republicans and 18 Republican state attorneys general, to overturn Biden’s victories in the battleground states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, and Pennsylvania.
