Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, urged “independent-minded” citizens to vote for Republicans on the day of the midterm elections.
To independent-minded voters:
Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, given that the Presidency is Democratic.
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 7, 2022
Musk referenced President Joe Biden’s control of the Executive Branch as evidence that a divide in Washington would be preferable to one-party dominance.
Musk previously stated that he voted early for Mayra Flores, a Republican who defeated Democrat Dan Sanchez in a special House of Representatives election in southern Texas.
Musk has regularly criticized Biden’s policy agenda.
Republicans are projected to gain control of the House on Tuesday, but control of the Senate is a toss-up, according to surveys.
The support comes less than a week after Musk took over Twitter and began drastically altering the site, much to the disgust of media figures and many Democrats.
Musk’s declared purpose in acquiring Twitter was to defend free expression, stating last week that a public square accessible to varied viewpoints is required for democracy to prosper.
Musk has become a lightning rod of criticism since taking over ownership of the social media giant Twitter, with liberals in particular being irate at his plan to implement freer speech on the platform.
