An elderly man was crossing a road in Rochester Hills, Michigan, when he was run over by an illegal immigrant.
The 72-year-old man was out for an early morning walk at 6:45 a.m. last week, and was dressed for the activity in a highly reflective vest.
When the man headed to the other side of the road through a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Rochester Road and Avon Road that morning, he was mowed down by a 2013 Ford Focus that was headed northbound, according to Fox 2 Detroit.
The “gravely injured” man was taken to a local hospital by Rochester Hills Fire Department paramedics, where he was treated.
While investigating the crash, police discovered the driver was a 28-year-old Columbian man who came into the country illegally at an undetermined time, with the help of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
It was determined that the illegal driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, nor was he speeding.
Despite the seriousness of the crime, the suspect was released from jail until he can make his first appearance at a federal court hearing.
Elsewhere in Michigan, the illegal immigrant who fatally shot 25-year-old Ruby Garcia in Grand Rapids was sentenced to 39 years in prison last week.
Brandon Ortiz-Vite, 26, who was deported in 2020, returned to the U.S. at an “unknown date,” Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official said.
On March 22, Ortiz-Vite and Garcia got into an argument while he was driving, when he shot her four times and left her body on the side of the road.
He pleaded guilty to get his first-degree murder charge swapped down to a lesser second-degree murder charge and will now spend nearly four decades behind bars.
When he is released Ortiz-Vite will likely be deported back to Mexico, according to Prosecutor Christopher Becker.
